IBM ThinkPad X61 (7762-W4R) (32 and 64bit)
Background
The IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad X61 Tablet featuring the Core 2 Duo processor. Small package packs a real punch. The laptop has a rotating monitor. On the laptop itself contains an express pcmcia slot, 3 USB, 1 SD, wireless on/off switch, video, 10/100/1000 ethernet/modem, firewire, mic, and headphones; very nice. A great screen resolution (1400x1050 at 50hz) can accomidate just about any application, and then some! Like all modern laptops, it can handle two monitors (LCD and external attached). Total weight is roughly 5lbs.
The docking base attaches an ultrabay slot capable of many Txx parts such as a CDROM/DVD drive, HDD tray. It also contains 10/100/1000 ethernet, serial, parallel, video, and 4 USB ports. With this, it adds some bulk to the laptop as expected.
Hardware
Model: IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad X61 Tablet
CPU Model: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU L7500 @ 1.60GHz
Memory: 4096MB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667 MHz SODIMM (2x2048MB)
Turbo Memory: Intel Corporation Turbo Memory Controller
Monitor: 12.1 inch SXGA+ (1400x1050) TFT display
Hard Drive: various eSATA
Video Card: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller
Sound Card: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller
Network Adapter: Intel Corporation 82566MM Gigabit Network Connection
Wireless Adapter: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN Network Connection
Cardbus: Ricoh Co Ltd RL5c476 II
USB1: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller
USB2: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller
Firewire: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C832 IEEE 1394 Controller
SD Card: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro Host Adapter
The X61 Tablet was used for setup with ThinkPad X6 UltraBase. This base features an UltraSlim Bay, 4 USB, 1 Ethernet, modem, VGA, audio, serial, and parallel connectors. It uses the same power supply adapter that the laptop supports.
Distribution: Fedora 8 x86
Fedora 8 installed as a straight base os with the three (3) options. The base does not install tpb-0.6.4-9.fc8 (ThinkPad Buttons), acpi-0.09-2.fc6 (ACPI). Fedora 8 did not automatically install kernel-PAE-2.6.23.1-49.fc8 to support the 4GB memory, simple fix and reboot to get it working.
Note, linux kernel doesn't support Intel's Turbo Memory. Aparently, Intel has not released any information regarding the hardware other than it is a miniPCI slot.
Fedora 8 does not detect the ThinkPad fingerprint reader. Use yum, etc, to install the ThinkFinger package (thinkfinger-0.3-7.fc8), then use the tf-tool to scan your fingerprints.
Distribution: Fedora 8 x86_64
Fedora 8 x86_64 installs just fine as well for those who want to use the 64bit version. Just about everything for the x86_32 (above) with the exception that the native kernel supports the full 4GB of RAM (ie no need for the PAE kernel).
Further benchmarks are below on 64bit performance.
Distribution: Fedora 9 x86
Installation of Fedora 8 and Fedora 9 are almost identical. Fedora 9 has a much improved network configuration, in that wireless is almost zero config. In addition, wireless and wired can coexist and not overwrite your routes so that they won't step on each other. The Thinkpad buttons package must be installed manually.
Wireless Devices
Wireless, simple, works right out of the box. WPA packages are installed by default, set it up and go tailored to your network..
Other Options
Coming soon.
Caviats
IBM/Lenovo included a nice on/off minilight on such laptops as the T42; and they've left that button (fn-PgUp) on the X61 Tablet model. But, they didn't include any light.
Todo
- Lid Rotate (and lay flat): ibm/hotkey HKEY 00000080 00005009 -- Should be mapped to rotate the monitor automagically to 1050x1400.
- Lid Rotate (back to upright): ibm/hotkey HKEY 00000080 0000500a
- ThinkVantage button: ibm/hotkey HKEY 00000080 00001018
- Tabletize pen reader
