Dell Inspiron 1420

Background

The Dell Inspiron 1420 featuring the Core 2 Duo processor, another small package packs a real punch. On the laptop itself contains an express pcmcia slot, 4 USB, 1 SD/xD/etc, wireless on/off switch, video, 10/100 ethernet/modem, firewire, integrated USB monitor webcam, mic, and headphones; very nice. A great screen resolution (1440x900 at 60hz) can accomidate just about any application, and then some! Like all modern laptops, it can handle two monitors (LCD and external attached). Total weight is roughly 6lbs.

Overall, the processing power appears a bit questionable as compared to the slower IBM/Lenovo X61 Tablet, and for some reason the sATA drive access is about half (by hdparm -tT /dev/sda command) as noted below.

But, with this laptop, you get your choice of about eight (8) different colors for your monitor. ;)

Distribution: Fedora 8 x86

Fedora 8 installed as a straight base OS and detects all hardware as appropriate. X configures automagically as usual. Fedora 8 x86_64 installs just fine as well for those who want to use the 64bit version. x86_32 distribution of Fedora 8 should work exactly identical.

See "Caviats" for other issues as related to the Dell Inspiron 1420 hardware.

Fedora 8 x86_64 installs just fine as well for those who want to use the 64bit version.

Further benchmarks are below on 64bit performance.

Wireless Devices

Wireless, simple, works right out of the box. WPA packages are installed by default, set it up and go tailored to your network..

Webcam Drivers

Use the Linux UVC driver and tools in order to get the integrated webcam working. Also install the V4L2 rpm package.

Todo

  • Sun Java install for 64bit Firefox.
